{"id":309,"date":"2021-03-04T06:50:55","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T06:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.doonuniversity.ac.in\/library\/?page_id=309"},"modified":"2023-12-16T09:31:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-16T09:31:33","slug":"referencing-style","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.doonuniversity.ac.in\/library\/research-support\/referencing-style\/","title":{"rendered":"Citation and References"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Why Citation is Important<\/h5>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to cite sources you used in your research for several reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>To show your reader you&#8217;ve done\u00a0proper research by listing sources you used to get your information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers\u00a0and acknowledging their ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>To avoid\u00a0plagiarism\u00a0by quoting words and ideas used by other authors<\/li>\n<li>To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography or a reference list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>About Citation<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Citing a source means that you show, within the body of your text, that you took words, ideas, figures, images, etc. from another place.<\/li>\n<li>Citations are a short way to uniquely identify a published work (e.g. book, article, chapter, website).\u00a0 They are found in bibliographies and reference lists and are also collected in article and book databases.<\/li>\n<li>Citations consist of standard elements and contain all the information necessary to identify and track down publications, including:\n<ul>\n<li>author name(s)<\/li>\n<li>titles of books, articles, and journals<\/li>\n<li>date of publication<\/li>\n<li>page numbers<\/li>\n<li>volume and issue numbers (for articles)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Citations may look different, depending on what is being cited and which style was used to create them.<\/p>\n<h5>What to Cite<\/h5>\n<p>You\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0cite:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facts, figures, ideas, or other information that is not common knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Ideas, words, theories, or exact language that another person used in other publicationsPublications that must be cited include books, book chapters, articles, web pages, theses, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Another person&#8217;s exact words should be quoted and cited to show proper credit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When in doubt, be safe and cite your source!<\/p>\n<h5>Reference Style<\/h5>\n<p>Academic organizations and some disciplines outline their own styles of how to cite sources and format research papers.\u00a0 You may have heard of or used some of the styles before.<\/p>\n<p>Consult these print and online style guides for examples of citing sources in the text of your paper and a bibliography or reference list<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>MLA<\/b>: Modern Language Association [Humanities]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apastyle.apa.org\/style-grammar-guidelines\/references\/examples\"><b>APA<\/b>: American Psychological Association [Social Sciences] APA Reference Style\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><b>CMS<\/b>: Chicago Manual of Style [various subjects]<\/li>\n<li><b>IEEE<\/b>: Institute of Electronics\u00a0&amp; Electrical Engineers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Manage Your References<\/h5>\n<p>Use these tools to help you organize and cite your references<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EndNote<\/li>\n<li>Zotero<\/li>\n<li>Mendeley<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can even use MS Word to manage your references;
