School of Environment & Natural Resources (SENR)

The School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) (Download SENR Brochure) was established in 2009 as a flagship School of the University. SENR aims at providing advanced training to the students through a structured curriculum with multidisciplinary approach involving latest advances in the fields of Environmental Science and Technology with an emphasis on research and innovation. The school is committed to excellence and building capacities of trained professionals who can meet the emerging environmental challenges of the 21st century. The SENR has cosmopolitan nature attracting researcher/students from all corners of India and the neighboring countries.

The Hon'ble Governor of Uttarakhand has identified SENR as centre of excellence. The school has been awarded innovative program scheme in the form of M.Tech. (Environmental Technology) by UGC in the year 2013. The School has also been awarded grant under the FIST Scheme by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, in 2014.

Academic Collaborations :

The SENR has established links with prominent research institutions such as Forest Research Institute (FRI), Survey of India, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Central Soil & Water Conservation Research & Training Institute (CSWCRTI), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and Wild life Institute of India (WII). The School also draws academic support from various institutions, viz. NEERI, IISc, IIT, JNU, IITM, ARIES, NIDM, ICAR, etc.

State of the Art Laboratory:

The SENR has a state of art laboratory equipped with high end sophisticated instruments such as Ion Chromatograph (IC), Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), CHNS Analyser, Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, LICOR Infrared Gas Analyser (IRGA), LICOR Photosynthetic Analyser, PCR with Gel Documentation, Fiber Analyser, Kjeldahl Nitrogen Analyser, UV visible spectrophotometer, Microwave digester, Anderson Cascade impact or, Flame photometer along with some minor instruments such as BOD incubators, hot air ovens, Autoclave, Laminar air flow, Micro balances, Electrophoresis unit, Distillation units.

A GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory with 20 computers, four Work Stations, Plotter and Scanner has been established. Ten licenses of ERDAS imaging and five licenses of ArcInfo have been procured for the GIS and RS laboratory.

Academic Programs:

  • M.Sc. Environmental Science (EVS)
  • M.Sc. Environmental Science (with specialization in Natural Resource Management (NRM))
  • M.Tech. Environmental Technology
  • Ph.D

The Ph.D. program includes extensive Course Work, Seminars and Theme papers of 20 credits of two semesters. This is followed by thesis work for Ph.D. on an approved topic for a minimum of two years (Four semesters) of 40 credits. Approval and successful defense of thesis is required for the award of PhD degree.
