Vision

Japanese cultural activities are integral part of the curriculum. Various academic and cultural activities like lectures by eminent professors, Seminars, workshops, Japanese movie screenings, educational tours etc are organized by the Department for better understanding of Japanese culture and tradition. Japanese native faculty has also been engaged for better understanding of the subject. Meritorious students are awarded various scholarships from Japanese Government to experience and enhance knowledge of Japanese language, culture, tradition and society etc.

The beginning of 21st century witnessed a dramatic transformation in bilateral relations between India and Japan. The latest ties and treaties between India and Japan will take the strategic and global partnership to a higher level in the field of defence, civil nuclear, infrastructure development etc. It is due to Japanese assistance which helped to conceptualize and execute the prestigious mega projects like Delhi Metro Project, The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor (CBIC), Bullet train and Kyoto Varanasi Project etc.

The scope of Japanese as a foreign language as career is bright and candidates willing to explore it have multitude of job opportunities in various multinational companies and multilateral organizations. Learning a foreign language is not only the gateway to understanding and appreciating other cultures but it also enhances career opportunities. The Department of Japanese Studies aims at a holistic program that not only offers excellent language education but also provides its students with a variety of cultural learning opportunities.

In view of the “Indo Japan Strategic partnership”, Japanese language will have an immense scope in times to come. Rise in Japanese companies like Suzuki, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Hitachi, Daikin etc is an indication of an abundant need of Japanese language proficient professionals to work in India and Japan. Academic qualification and proficiency in Japanese language opens the gate for career opportunities in tourism, hospitality, airlines, embassies, international organisations, education, interpretation and translation work in MNC’s and govt. organization etc.

Mission

The Department of Japanese Studies, established in the year 2013, is committed to excellence in imparting quality education with the vision and mission to meet the emerging demand of the future professionals, researchers, and academicians in the field of Japanese Language, Literature and Culture.

Doon University is the only University in Northern India offering courses in Japanese language after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi and the University of Delhi. The Department of Japanese Studies with committed faculty and innovative curriculum designed by experts from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) offers five year MA Integrated course in Japanese Studies and One Year Certificate course in Japanese Language.

The five year MA Integrated program, aims to equip the student to make a bright and rewarding career in the field of Japanese Language. The initial three-years BA (Hons) program includes basics of Japanese language, history & culture, translation, interpretation, essay & letter writing and literature enabling the students to speak, write, understand, translate & interpret Japanese language. The two years of Master’s program, focuses on advanced translation, interpretation, literature, Socio cultural History of Japan etc to make the students proficient and expert in Japanese language in the field of their choice of employment. In addition to this, The Department also offers ‘One Year Certificate Course in Japanese’.
